Conservatory Painting in Durham

Conservatory painting in Durham by Durham Painters, suburban house exterior with painted framework

Durham Painters paint and respray conservatory frameworks across Durham City and County Durham.

What we cover:

  • UPVC conservatory frameworks — colour refresh or full colour change
  • Aluminium conservatory frames — specialist preparation and topcoat
  • Timber conservatory frames — exterior wood preparation and painting
  • Dwarf walls and surrounding brickwork — completing the full visual refresh
  • Combined with window frames and fascias where required

Newton Hall and Belmont have a large number of 1990s and 2000s housing estates. Many had white UPVC conservatories added during the original build or as early extensions. After twenty to thirty years, these frameworks yellow, stain, and look dated. Respraying the conservatory framework costs a fraction of replacement.

Conservatory Painting Services

Each conservatory material requires a different preparation and primer system.

UPVC Conservatory Frameworks

White UPVC is the most common conservatory material on housing built from the 1980s through to the 2010s. Over time, UPVC yellows with UV exposure, picks up staining that cannot be cleaned off, and looks out of place once the rest of the house has been repainted or modernised.

UPVC cannot be painted with standard exterior paint. The plastic surface is non-porous and needs a specialist adhesion primer to create a bond before any topcoat is applied. Without the primer stage, paint applied to UPVC will peel within months.

Durham Painters degrease and lightly abrade all UPVC profiles, then apply the adhesion primer. Two topcoats of spray finish follow. Colour options include the full range of grey, charcoal, anthracite, and cream tones popular for conservatory colour changes.

Aluminium Conservatory Frames

Older aluminium-framed conservatories were often powder-coated at the factory in brown, bronze, or white. As the powder coat ages it chalks, fades, and chips at edges. Older aluminium conservatories are more common on 1970s–80s properties in Crossgate and the older streets near the city centre.

Aluminium requires a different primer system to UPVC. The surface is cleaned, any corrosion is treated, and an etch primer suitable for metal is applied before the topcoat. The finish is durable and a significant cosmetic improvement over an aged factory powder coat.

Timber Conservatory Frames

Some period properties in Gilesgate, Crossgate, and the older streets near Durham city centre have traditional lean-to conservatories with timber frameworks. These are generally Victorian or Edwardian in style and need the same preparation as any exterior timber — stripping of loose and flaking paint, sanding, priming, and application of a flexible exterior finish.

Timber conservatory frameworks should not be painted with interior gloss. An exterior oil-based or water-based exterior trim paint is the correct product — one that handles moisture movement without cracking or peeling.

Colour Options and Dwarf Walls

White conservatories converted to anthracite grey, charcoal, or deep green-grey are among the most popular colour changes we carry out. The contrast between a dark-framed conservatory and the garden is striking, and the change brings a dated 1990s addition into line with current exterior design trends.

Most conservatories sit on a dwarf wall. If it is painted render or rough-cast, it can be repainted to match or complement the conservatory framework colour. Getting the shade consistent across all UPVC and metal elements matters — particularly on Newton Hall estate properties where the conservatory sits alongside window frames and a painted front door.

Here’s How It Works

1. Conservatory Assessment

We check the material, note the surface condition, assess the extent of masking required, and quote a fixed price before starting.

2. Cleaning and Degreasing

All profiles are washed, degreased, and allowed to dry fully.

3. Surface Preparation

UPVC profiles are lightly abraded; aluminium profiles are cleaned of any corrosion; timber is stripped and sanded as required.

4. Masking

All glazing panels, seals, sills, and surrounding surfaces are masked thoroughly. A conservatory has a large glass-to-frame ratio. Masking is the most time-consuming part of the job.

5. Primer Application

The correct adhesion primer for the frame material is applied and allowed to cure.

6. Topcoat

Two spray coats are applied for a smooth, even finish. Edges and joints are checked before masking is removed.

What Affects the Cost
